Richard Cadigan, who was a member of the Rye Fire Department for nearly two decades, was struck at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, police said. The incident is believed to be accidental in nature.

Cardigan was taken to Westchester Medical Center, but on Friday, Feb. 1, the Port Chester Police Department announced that he had died.

"It's really rare to find people like him. The world would be a better place if there were more people like him," Rye Professional Firefighters' President John Castelhano said.

Police noted that the driver stayed on scene and cooperated with police after striking Cadigan. The fatal incident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have seen the accident or has information has been asked to contact investigators at the Port Chester Police Department by calling (914) 939-1000.
